Senior Software Engineer, Applied AI (AI Engineering)

Location: Cambridge, MA, USA or San Francisco, CA, USA

Expected base salary: $144,000–$270,000 USD annually. Bonus potential and early-stage equity are also available.

What you will do

• Design and deploy backend services and data pipelines for LLM, RAG, and agentic AI applications.
• Build high-performance APIs and microservices connecting AI models, scientific tools, and user-facing applications.
• Architect scalable pipelines for structured, unstructured, and vectorized data.
• Implement and optimize SQL, NoSQL, and vector databases for low-latency retrieval and inference.
• Build production-ready AI infrastructure using AWS, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code.
• Collaborate with ML researchers, platform engineers, and scientists to bring models and algorithms into production.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional experience building and scaling production systems, including APIs, data pipelines, and distributed services.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Strong Python experience with FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
• Experience with SQL, NoSQL, and vector databases, including schema design, indexing, and query optimization.
• Hands-on experience integrating ML models or AI-driven workflows into production services.
• Proficiency with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code, plus the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-experts.

Nice to have

• Experience in life sciences, materials sciences, or other research-heavy fields.
