About the Team
The People Operations team forms the operational backbone of OpenAI’s People function. We own the systems, controls, data integrity, and end-to-end lifecycle processes that ensure fairness, compliance, and high velocity as OpenAI grows globally.

About the Role
As Director of People Operations, you will lead and scale the core infrastructure that enables a complex, global workforce to operate safely and effectively.
This is not a steady-state operations role — it is a build-and-scale role requiring strong judgment, clarity under pressure, and the ability to design systems that will stand up to internal and external scrutiny.
You will own:
— Data integrity, compliance, and operational controls
— End-to-end lifecycle processes
— SOX-relevant controls and audit readiness
— HR systems performance and vendor management
— Operational readiness for new geographies and workforce changes
You will lead a high-performing People Operations team while acting as a trusted partner to senior leaders across the organization.
What You’ll Do
— Own and scale People Operations across onboarding, lifecycle events, and offboarding worldwide
— Lead, coach, and grow a high-performing People Ops team, setting a high bar for operational judgment
— Ensure end-to-end data accuracy, proactively identifying risks and process gaps before they impact compliance or trust
— Design and rigorously test controls and workflows with strong focus on SOX auditability and scalability
— Partner closely with Finance, Legal, IT, Security, and People Compliance on mission-critical initiatives
— Oversee HR systems and vendors, ensuring infrastructure supports rapid global expansion
— Drive operational readiness for new entities, new geographies, and evolving regulatory requirements
— Establish operating rhythms, dashboards, and reporting to identify trends and surface risks early
— Serve as a steady operational leader in moments of ambiguity, change, or high-intensity scaling
Who You Are
— 12+ years of experience in People Operations or related disciplines, including leadership of global teams
— Deep expertise in scalable HR systems, lifecycle processes, and People Operations in a high-growth environment
— Strong understanding of operational controls, audits, and SOX requirements
— Demonstrated ability to partner cross-functionally on high-consequence initiatives
— Skilled at building, developing, and empowering operationally strong teams
— Exceptional judgment, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize under pressure
