TL;DR

Senior Applied Scientist (AI/ML): Building large-scale machine learning systems for ads retrieval, ranking, and marketplace optimization with an accent on predicting user engagement and advertiser value. Focus on developing end-to-end models, feature and signal design, and rigorous offline and online evaluation in production.

Location: Hybrid, onsite in Redmond, United States. Employees must live within a 50-mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. and are expected to work from the office at least four days per week starting January 26, 2026.

Salary: USD $119,800 – $234,700 per year (U.S. national range); USD $158,400 – $258,000 per year (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area).

What you will do

• Drive algorithmic improvements to online and offline systems.
• Develop and deliver robust and scalable machine learning solutions.
• Build large-scale machine learning systems for ads retrieval, ranking, and marketplace optimization.
• Power candidate generation, relevance scoring, and serving stack ranking with end-to-end models.
• Manage the full modeling lifecycle, including training data, labeling strategy, feature and signal design, and model development.
• Collaborate at the intersection of machine learning, economics, and large-scale systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience; OR Master’s Degree with 3+ years; OR Doctorate with 1+ year.
• Solid background in Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Causal Inference, Data Science, or Data Mining.
• Proficient problem solving and data analysis skills.
• Proficient software design and development skills/experience.
• English: B2 required.

Nice to have

• Master’s Degree in a related field and 6+ years of experience, or Doctorate in a related field and 3+ years of experience.
• Research experience (publications) in statistical machine learning, deep learning, data mining, causal inference, information retrieval, or Bayesian inference.
• 2+ years of experience in statistical machine learning, deep learning, data mining, causal inference, information retrieval, game theory, mechanism design, optimization, or Bayesian inference.
