Principal Software Engineer (AI)

TL;DR

Principal Software Engineer (AI): Building and optimizing the next-generation platform for Bing and hirify.global, focusing on Web data, scalability, index quality, and AI/ML model integration for search and safety. With an accent on designing and implementing AI-driven platform and backend solutions to advance MAI Web Data’s Safety systems. Focus on instantiating new technology into production, developing, evaluating, and deploying algorithms and solutions with the highest system performance, quality, and accuracy at massive scale.

Location: Hybrid in Redmond, United States. Employees within a 50-mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. are expected to work from the office at least four days per week.

Salary: USD $139,900 – $274,800 per year (general U.S. range).

What you will do

• Partner with stakeholders to determine requirements, lead design, project, and release plans.
• Lead by example and mentor engineers to produce extensible, scalable, high-performance, resilient, and maintainable design and code.
• Inspire accountability as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), monitoring systems and proactively improving them.
• Promote innovation and engineering excellence by seeking and sharing new knowledge and adapting to new trends and technical solutions.
• Advance the platform and pipelines for MAI Web Data’s Safety systems in a modern direction.
• Work with Applied Scientists to develop, evaluate, operate, and deploy algorithms and solutions for system performance, quality, and accuracy at massive scale.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience working with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Kafka) or building highly scalable backend systems (e.g., distributed systems, microservices architecture, cloud-native services).

Nice to have

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience, OR Bachelor’s Degree AND 10+ years experience.
• Experience processing Terabyte to Petabyte scale data with efficient algorithms for feature engineering.
• Experience optimizing for high inference ROI and deploying AI/ML models (e.g., Decision Tree, Forest, LLM/SLM, multi-modal) on accelerators (NVIDIA, AMD, TPU).
• Familiarity with Search stack, Grounding stack for AI Assistants, black-hat SEO, and malicious techniques targeting search and AI Assistants.
