Applied AI Engineer (Enterprise Healthcare Life Sciences)

Location: San Francisco, New York City, or US Remote. Office-based employees follow a hybrid model with three days per week in the office. Relocation assistance is available to new employees.

Salary: $251K–$278K plus equity.

What you will do

• Design, build, evaluate, and deploy AI systems from prototypes through reliable production and scaled adoption.
• Partner with enterprise customers to define high-value use cases, technical architectures, implementation plans, evaluation strategies, and success criteria.
• Make technical decisions across model selection, agents and tools, retrieval, context design, data pipelines, evaluation, reliability, observability, latency, cost, safety, security, and governance.
• Diagnose implementation challenges, reproduce failures, test hypotheses, and resolve deployment blockers.
• Collaborate with customer engineering, security, privacy, clinical, and business teams as well as OpenAI Product, Research, Engineering, Security, and Go-to-Market teams.
• Create reusable architectures, tooling, playbooks, and technical guidance for future enterprise deployments.

Requirements

• Personally designed, built, and shipped AI or machine-learning systems in enterprise environments, contributing through coding, architecture, evaluation, debugging, or production engineering.
• Highly proficient in Python and comfortable working end to end across model APIs, agent and tool development, retrieval, data pipelines, evaluation, observability, integrations, and production operations.
• Systematically evaluate AI systems using representative data, automated graders, production signals, and human judgment.
• Experience with enterprise production requirements including integrations, reliability, observability, security, privacy, data governance, performance, and cost.
• Experience delivering AI or software in healthcare, life sciences, or similarly complex regulated enterprises, with measurable outcomes beyond a proof of concept.
• Familiarity with sensitive data, legacy systems, and interoperability.
• Ability to connect technical decisions to customer workflows, adoption, and measurable business outcomes.
• Clear and credible communication with engineers, technical leaders, security and product teams, and executives.
• End-to-end ownership, strong technical judgment, ability to work through ambiguity, rapid learning, constructive challenge, and humble collaboration.

Nice to have

• Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, or another relevant programming language.
• Healthcare or life sciences experience is strongly preferred; experience in other regulated enterprise environments is also considered.
• Prior OpenAI product experience is not required.
