Senior Backend Engineer (Java)

What you will do

• Design, build, maintain, deploy, and support scalable backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and modern cloud technologies.
• Develop services that power customised customer reporting and support increasing reporting demand and scale.
• Shape product decisions, architecture, technical direction, and feature delivery with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders.
• Participate in architectural discussions, continuous improvement, and operational ownership across the software lifecycle.
• Collaborate through pair or mob programming, and review, validate, and improve AI-generated code.

Requirements

• Strong commercial experience building backend applications with Java and Spring Boot.
• Ability to own work from design through delivery and production support.
• Ability to explain and justify technical decisions through clear reasoning and make sound technical decisions.
• Collaborative approach to working with product managers, designers, engineers, and stakeholders.
• Preference for simple, maintainable solutions over unnecessary complexity.
• Comfort reviewing, validating, and improving AI-assisted code contributions while maintaining engineering standards.
• Curiosity, pragmatism, and a continuous-improvement mindset across products, processes, and engineering practices.
• Interest in shaping technical direction rather than only implementing requirements.

Nice to have

• Production experience with Domain-Driven Design principles.
• Experience with Hibernate, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of messaging technologies and event-driven systems such as NATS.
• Experience with observability tools such as OpenTelemetry and Grafana.
• Experience in product-focused, cross-functional teams.
• Experience using AI tools to accelerate software delivery while maintaining high engineering standards.

Hiring process
