Billing Engineer

Location: Remote in the United States, with Canada also listed as an available location

Salary: $143,000–$179,000 USD base salary annually, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Design, build, test, document, and maintain core billing software components.
• Integrate third-party billing platforms such as Stripe, Metronome, Orb, and Zuora.
• Develop metering, pricing, rating, subscription, usage-based billing, reconciliation, and reporting capabilities.
• Track and report customer usage while maintaining billing accuracy, data integrity, high availability, and responsiveness.
• Collaborate with product, sales, finance, support, UX/UI, and engineering teams on billing requirements and customer inquiries.
• Drive code quality, architecture reviews, technical documentation, mentorship, observability, alerting, error handling, incident response, and root cause analysis.

Requirements

• Backend software engineering experience focused on billing, payments, or financial systems.
• Deep knowledge of SaaS billing models, including subscriptions, usage-based pricing, proration, discounts, and entitlements.
• Experience integrating third-party billing platforms or building custom billing systems.
• Experience designing and managing distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
• Proficiency with SQL and data modeling, particularly for financial and usage data.
• Strong understanding of APIs and experience building or integrating internal billing APIs.
• Strong proficiency in Go, or production-quality programming experience in another language with willingness to work with Go.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and flexibility in a dynamic startup environment.
