Software Engineering Lead (AgTech)

Location: Hybrid in Raleigh, North Carolina; practical commuting distance to the Raleigh office required, with onsite work typically 1–3 days per week. Travel: 10%.

Salary: $115,000–$130,000 annually plus equity.

What you will do

• Take primary engineering ownership of the Mobile GroundOwl application after a structured handoff, including issue diagnosis, enhancements, dependency management, releases, APIs, and integrations.
• Improve mobile application reliability through automated testing, observability, documentation, and support tooling for offline field operation, data synchronization, integrity, and recovery.
• Design and develop laboratory automation integrating application software, firmware, sensors, motors, actuators, microcontrollers or single-board computers, and custom electronics.
• Build control logic, data-acquisition software, calibration routines, diagnostics, safety interlocks, and operator interfaces.
• Contribute across customer-facing applications, backend services, integrations, device software, and internal engineering tools in collaboration with product, software, hardware, laboratory, and operations teams.
• Apply design, code review, testing, observability, security, documentation, and AI-assisted development practices while retaining responsibility for correctness, safety, and quality.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 2+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent experience through internships, co-ops, research, or substantial shipped projects.
• Experience maintaining or shipping a production mobile application; React Native and TypeScript/JavaScript experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong Python development skills and comfort with C/C++ or another language used for embedded, automation, or systems development.
• Hands-on experience with sensors, motors, motor drivers, actuators, microcontrollers, data acquisition, and basic electronics troubleshooting.
• Experience rapidly prototyping with real hardware, diagnosing failures, testing solutions, and iterating.
• Experience with Git, code review, automated testing, and dependable software release practices.
• Ability to use AI coding assistants effectively, independently validate generated output, and maintain quality, correctness, security, and safety standards.
• Clear communication, documentation, independent work, and effective collaboration across software, hardware, laboratory, product, and operations teams. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship or transfer is not available.

• Fast-paced startup experience and mobile release management for the Apple App Store and Google Play.
• Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, USB, serial, CAN, I2C, SPI, or other device communication protocols.
• Linux-based edge computing, microcontrollers, real-time systems, embedded firmware, laboratory instrumentation, robotics, industrial controls, motion control, or machine vision.
• Cloud APIs, backend services, databases, or telemetry systems.
• Reading schematics and designing or modifying custom electronics and PCBs with KiCad, Altium, or similar tools.
• Mechanical prototyping, CAD, 3D printing, test fixtures, design-for-assembly, agriculture, or field-deployed technology experience.
