Human-Centered AI Research Intern, Human Language Models

Location: Los Altos, California, United States; hybrid, in-office role

Salary: $45–$65/hour for California-based roles.

What you will do

• Scope a research project aligned with the Adaptive Behavior Systems team’s core research efforts.
• Drive the technical plan, including problem formulation, model development, and evaluation design, with mentor and team feedback.
• Execute the project using TRI resources.
• Study how language-based generative models represent human intentions and behavior, including individual differences and diverse human perspectives.
• Present the project approach and findings to department, division, TRI, and Toyota business-group stakeholders.
• Produce work that informs internal strategy and may be publishable in an academic journal or conference.

Requirements

• Current Ph.D. student in AI/ML, computer science, computational social science, or a related field.
• Research experience with LLMs and a publication record in relevant topics, including LLM evaluation and benchmarking, personalization and user modeling, LLM post-training and alignment, or computational human modeling.
• Experience with Python programming and deep-learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Interest in human-centered research, such as behavioral science or computational social science.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
