Research Engineer / Scientist, Pre-training (AI)

Location: Remote-friendly with required travel; San Francisco, Seattle, or New York City. Staff are expected to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time, and some roles may require more office attendance.

Annual salary: $500,000–$850,000 USD.

What you will do

• Conduct research and implement solutions in model architecture, algorithms, data processing, and optimizer development.
• Lead small research projects independently and collaborate on larger initiatives.
• Design, run, and analyze scientific experiments involving large language models.
• Optimize and scale training infrastructure for efficiency and reliability.
• Develop developer tooling and contribute across the stack, from low-level optimizations to high-level model design.

Requirements

• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field; the logistics section also accepts a bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Relevant field of study demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.
• Strong software engineering skills and a track record of building complex systems.
• Expertise in Python and experience with deep learning frameworks, preferably PyTorch.
• Familiarity with large-scale machine learning, especially language models.
• Ability to balance research goals with practical engineering constraints, solve problems effectively, and deliver results.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Care about the societal impact of AI work.
• Required years of experience correlate with the internal job level for the position.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-performance, large-scale machine learning systems.
• Familiarity with GPUs, Kubernetes, and operating-system internals.
• Experience with language modeling using Transformer architectures.
• Knowledge of reinforcement learning techniques.
• Background in large-scale ETL processes.
