Automated Driving Advanced Development Intern, Machine Learning Research (AI)

Location: Los Altos, California, United States; hybrid, in-office role

Pay: $45–$65/hour for California-based roles

What you will do

• Conduct research on generative modeling for vision-based end-to-end planning in automated driving.
• Implement scalable architectures that process raw sensor data into vehicle trajectories, including long-tail scenarios with limited data.
• Prototype, validate, and iterate on architectures using imitation learning and large-scale data.
• Perform closed-loop evaluations in sensor simulations and real-world testing environments.
• Explore multimodal and language-conditioned models, external data, and transfer learning to improve policy generalization.
• Collaborate with researchers, data engineers, and autonomy engineers to integrate ML components for perception, planning, and control from prototype through deployment.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or a related field.
• Proficiency in Python for implementing and evaluating research ideas.
• Experience with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Understanding of version control, testing, and software engineering fundamentals.
• Passion for collaborative engineering and building reliable ML systems for real-world autonomy.

Nice to have

• Experience with ML engineering workflows, including data curation, preprocessing, training, ablation studies, evaluation, deployment, and inference optimization.
• CUDA debugging and profiling experience, plus metrics dashboards, experiment tracking, or MLOps tools such as Weights & Biases, MLflow, or Metaflow.
• Experience with robotics or real-world sensor data such as video, lidar, IMU, or radar.
• Experience with object detection, 3D perception, foundation models, pre-training, efficient fine-tuning, multimodal Transformers, or distributed training.
• Experience with ROS, CARLA, Nvidia DriveSim, vehicle interfaces, motion planning, or automated driving domains.
