Engineering Manager - Protection and Controls (Power Systems)

Location: Remote within the United States; travel required at 20%+.

What you will do

• Lead system protection and coordination studies for transmission systems and generation interconnections.
• Design protection schemes and develop protective relay and device settings for 69 kV–500 kV transmission and sub-transmission systems.
• Perform transmission modeling, short-circuit and equipment-duty analysis, relay coordination studies, outage reviews, and root-cause analysis.
• Verify NERC PRC compliance, including PRC-005, PRC-019, PRC-023, PRC-024, PRC-025, PRC-026, and PRC-027.
• Provide technical guidance to clients and stakeholders, including recommendations on protection philosophies, standards, equipment operation, and settings changes.
• Manage and supervise a team, lead process improvements, support business development, and maintain technical documentation and project communications.

Requirements

• Licensed Professional Engineer required in Texas, Illinois, or California.
• 8+ years of experience in system protection and control required.
• Strong technical foundation in transmission power system protection and planning.
• Experience with ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, Powerbase, SEL Quickset, and GE Enervista UR Setup.
• Experience with SEL equipment, software, and/or development of programming files using SEL Quickset.
• Familiarity with ANSI/IEEE guidelines for transmission system protection design and studies.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities, with strong communication and teamwork skills preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience with CYME, Synergi, Windmil/LightTable, or other distribution power flow software.
• Experience with inverter-based power plants.
• Exposure to transmission protection design guidelines and philosophies.
• Experience responsibly leveraging AI and automation tools to improve quality, productivity, and innovation.
