Staff UX/UI Designer (Defense)

Location: Hybrid, three days per week in the El Segundo or San Francisco office

Salary: $160,000–$220,000 base compensation per year, excluding bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead UX design for key products and internal tools from concept through launch as the senior-most UX voice.
• Partner with engineering to design interfaces, workflows, and interactions within technical constraints.
• Introduce user research practices, including usability testing and user interviews, and apply findings to design decisions.
• Define UX standards, best practices, processes, and scalable design systems across products.
• Translate complex technical workflows into intuitive experiences and communicate design rationale to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Establish the foundation for a growing UX function and influence priorities with engineering, product, and leadership.

Requirements

• 10+ years of UX design experience, with demonstrated staff- or principal-level work on complex products.
• Experience conducting or overseeing user research, including usability testing and interviews, and using it to inform design decisions.
• Strong senior-level portfolio covering research, interaction design, and polished end-to-end execution.
• Experience collaborating closely with engineering and translating technical constraints into effective design solutions.
• Proficiency in Figma and standard UX/prototyping tools.
• Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and influence skills, including the ability to set direction and build organizational buy-in.
• Ability to work independently with substantial ownership and ambiguity while building a new function.
• Ability to work hybrid three days per week from the El Segundo or San Francisco office.

Nice to have

• Experience designing technical, engineering-heavy, or hardware-adjacent products.
• Experience with map-based, geospatial, or location-based interfaces.
• Defense or government experience, especially command and control systems.
• Experience establishing design systems from scratch.
• Bachelor's degree in design, HCI, psychology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• U.S. citizenship.
