Assistant Resident Engineer (Roads, Bridges)

Location: Hybrid role in San Diego, California, combining remote work with client sites and hirify.global offices; regular in-person time is required.

Salary: USD 150,000–180,000 per year

What you will do

• Deliver complex, multi-jurisdictional bridge and roadway improvement projects while supporting the Resident Engineer.
• Perform and oversee daily field inspections and quality assurance against approved plans, specifications, and special provisions.
• Coordinate with contractors, utilities, public agencies, and Construction Management Consultants to resolve field issues and minimize delays.
• Review submittals, RFI responses, progress schedules, reports, and other project documentation.
• Oversee construction materials testing and sampling, coordinating with staking, materials testing, and environmental monitoring teams.
• Support contract administration, including change orders, negotiations, pay estimates, claims documentation, progress tracking, and calculations for grades, alignment, quantities, falsework, shoring, and structural components.

Requirements

• Engineer In Training (EIT) certification is required; a California Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.
• At least eight years of roadway or highway construction inspection and field engineering experience on major public works projects.
• Experience on at least one Caltrans-administered or federally funded highway project.
• At least three years of experience in structural mechanics, stress analysis, or bridge construction inspection.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of concrete and steel bridge materials, falsework, and shoring systems.
• Experience as an Assistant or Resident Engineer on bridge, river crossing, roadway, or heavy civil construction projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including leading field inspection staff, coordinating with contractors and public agencies, and making timely technical field decisions.
• Proficiency with Caltrans construction documentation standards, E-Builder/PMCS systems, and Microsoft Office.
• Familiarity with environmental compliance and stormwater management on Caltrans projects.
• Experience with tolling, smart corridor, or ITS-equipped roadway projects; experience with Riverside County, the City of Riverside, or Caltrans District 8 is highly desirable.
