Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) Test Manager (Quantum Computing)

What you will do

• Own the hardware test estate, from current CI systems through new QA and staging systems for current and future quantum-computer programmes.
• Define test-system architecture, including system purpose, representation, usage, reservation, scheduling, availability, and runbooks.
• Plan and deliver new test-system builds with Manufacturing and manage maintenance, upgrades, and programme-baseline alignment.
• Shape testing strategy with Software and Science teams, deciding what runs in simulation, emulators, or real hardware and how results gate releases.
• Automate provisioning, firmware flashing, recovery, and configuration as code.
• Hire, develop, and lead a small team while collaborating with Quantum System Infrastructure, Compute IT, Facilities, Manufacturing, Software, and Science.

Requirements

• Strong software testing and QA background covering test strategy, test infrastructure, and continuous integration.
• Working knowledge of modern CI/CD, such as GitHub Actions or comparable tools.
• Automation-first approach focused on repeatable and reliable systems rather than manual work.
• Ability to guide and review test-automation development in Python or a similar language; serving as the technical director rather than the primary author.
• Experience owning test infrastructure where software is validated against real hardware, such as network or security appliances, autonomous vehicles, drones, defence systems, robotics, or other embedded products.
• Capability to design representative test environments and balance simulation with hardware-in-the-loop testing.
• Practical understanding of flaky devices, rig contention, and environment drift.
• Experience leading or building a small testing team or function.
• Strong collaboration skills, comfort with ambiguity, and experience building from scratch in a fast-moving technical environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with complex hardware and software systems or similarly demanding engineering environments.
• Experience in quantum computing is not required.
