Research Software Engineering Intern (Python)

hirify.global develops and manufactures semiconductor inspection systems based on quantum sensing, using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond to map electrical current inside advanced chip architectures.

What you will do

• Bring Pre-Development measurement software into one shared Python framework based on a mentor-defined target architecture.
• Migrate existing measurement protocols and help engineers implement new protocols as framework modules.
• Maintain the GitHub Actions CI/CD pipeline, including tests, linting, packaging, and releases.
• Perform first-pass pull request reviews for tests, conventions, and API conformance.
• Validate migrated protocols on Quantum Diamond Microscope systems with engineers.
• Document and hand over the framework so the team can operate it independently after the internship.

Requirements

• Enrolled in or recently graduated from computer science, software engineering, computational engineering, physics, or electrical engineering with a strong software focus.
• Available full time for a six-month internship, starting as soon as possible, during or after studies.
• Working knowledge of Python, including package structure, type hints, tests, and refactoring or consolidating code written by others.
• Routine use of Git and CI, with knowledge of testing hardware-dependent code through mocked instruments, recorded data, and simulation, while separating real-hardware runs into another stage.
• Experience working with AI coding agents and checking their output carefully.
• Ability to review code, receive feedback, agree on common interfaces, and treat colleagues as users.
• Fluent English and on-site availability in Munich.

Nice to have

• Experience with instrument control or lab automation in Python using qudi, QCoDeS, or PyMeasure.
• Contributions to open-source projects.
