Engineering Manager (Conversational AI)

Location: Hybrid in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with in-person collaboration required Monday–Wednesday

Salary: CA$154,000–CA$195,000 base pay, plus equity

What you will do

• Lead the Conversational AI engineering team building Alfie, a conversational AI assistant.
• Build, review, and ship features alongside engineers using AI tools and LLM-based development workflows.
• Own priorities, delivery, quality, and roadmap execution in partnership with product management, data teams, and the AI Architect.
• Guide development of APIs, data models, microservices, conversational interfaces, and scalable architecture using React, TypeScript, and AWS.
• Recruit, mentor, and grow engineers while establishing AI-augmented ways of working.
• Maintain observability, stability, and rigorous quality standards for experiments and customer-facing features.

Requirements

• 3+ years of formal engineering management experience leading a team of engineers.
• Experience changing team practices through AI tooling, including the ability to explain which previous practices were removed and why.
• Ability to operate backend microservices in TypeScript or Python with Postgres and AWS, deployed on Kubernetes.
• Experience creating clean contracts and APIs that support agentic workflows.
• Hands-on experience with LLM-based and agentic systems, including prompt design, tool or function calling, multi-step agent reasoning, and evaluation.
• Experience shaping both assistant behavior and how that behavior is presented to users.
• Proven delivery of customer-facing SaaS products focused on metrics-driven growth, conversion, and user experience.
• Ability to communicate complex technical and AI-related trade-offs as actionable plans for leadership and cross-functional partners.
