TL;DR
2027 Summer Intern - Research and Development - Aftertreatment Catalysis (AI/ML): Developing and evaluating automotive emissions-control catalysts with an accent on catalyst performance, durability, reaction kinetics, materials characterization, and data-driven discovery. Focus on designing experiments, building predictive and system-level models, applying machine learning to catalyst datasets, and identifying materials and operating-condition design principles.

Location: Hybrid in Warren, Michigan, United States; attendance required at least three times per week. Summer internship start dates are May 24 or June 14, 2027.

Company

hirify.global develops automotive technologies focused on zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.

What you will do

  • Design, conduct, and analyze laboratory experiments evaluating catalysts, washcoats, powders, and aftertreatment cores.
  • Prepare samples and support testing with laboratory reactor systems and analytical characterization tools.
  • Investigate catalyst activity, selectivity, conversion efficiency, thermal durability, aging, sintering, and degradation mechanisms.
  • Develop reaction-kinetic, catalyst-performance, degradation, or system-level models and process data with Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Apply statistical learning, machine learning, optimization, and uncertainty quantification to catalyst and materials datasets, including AI/ML approaches for materials discovery and experiment planning.
  • Document methods, prepare technical summaries, present findings, and collaborate with researchers, engineers, universities, national laboratories, suppliers, and other GM organizations.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, data science, physics, or a related STEM field.
  • Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer internship.
  • Demonstrated interest in at least one of heterogeneous catalysis, reaction engineering, emissions control, materials science, laboratory experimentation and analytical characterization, mathematical modeling and simulation, scientific computing and numerical methods, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or optimization.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical documentation skills.
  • Must be a U.S. Person: U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee, due to export control restrictions.
  • Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future, including H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, J-1, or other immigration support.

Culture & Benefits

  • Hybrid work arrangement with regular onsite collaboration in Warren.
  • Work with multidisciplinary research and engineering teams and external academic, laboratory, and supplier partners.
  • Inclusive workplace focused on belonging and equal employment opportunity.
  • Benefits and well-being support are available from the first day of employment.
