Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) Capability Engineering Team Lead (AI)

Location: Rahway, New Jersey, United States; hybrid work arrangement; domestic relocation; US, Canada, and Puerto Rico residents are directed to this site.

Base salary: $173,200–$272,600 per year, plus annual bonus and long-term incentive eligibility where applicable.

What you will do

• Supervise a cross-functional team of AI/ML engineers and data scientists developing NLP and agentic AI capabilities for therapeutic research and development.
• Build, deploy, publish, and optimize AI methods, models, pipelines, and agentic workflows for translation, content generation, document drafting, workflow optimization, data enrichment, literature mining, target and biomarker prioritization, and representation learning.
• Partner with stakeholders and product teams to design, build, evaluate, and iteratively improve AI and software solutions.
• Develop human-in-the-loop AI approaches and production-ready systems using modern agentic architectures, orchestration, and deployment practices.
• Collaborate across R&D, informatics, image processing, bioinformatics, representation learning, and decision sciences.
• Present plans and results to scientific and IT leadership, contribute to AI strategy, monitor AI regulations and internal policies, and mentor and recruit technical talent.

Requirements

• PhD in data science, AI/ML/LLM/agentic system engineering, computer science, semantic engineering, a related discipline, or a scientific field plus 5 years of relevant industry experience; or an M.S. in a similar field plus 6 years; or a B.S. in a similar field plus 7 years.
• At least 5 years of technical leadership experience with AI/ML, NLP, or agentic AI projects or products.
• At least 2 years of experience supervising team members.
• Strong technical and non-technical communication, planning, teamwork, leadership, critical evaluation, solution architecture, and implementation skills.
• Deep understanding of modern LLM and agentic architectures, including RAG, tool calling, MCP, structured extraction, and agent orchestration.
• Fluency in Python, Git, environment management such as uv or Docker, and at least one ML framework such as PyTorch or vLLM.
• Strong statistical analysis skills, including understanding the implications of class imbalance.
• Experience with Apache Spark, Apache Airflow, agentic protocols and standards such as MCP, A2A, and A2UI, and production-ready AI and software solutions.
• Experience with AI/ML deployment and operations, DevOps, CI/CD, agentic system development such as LangGraph, text processing, information retrieval, search systems, semantic engineering, and/or data engineering.
• Familiarity with enterprise AI governance, data privacy boundaries, validation, fairness, and ethical AI topics.
• Required skills include Apache Airflow, Apache Spark, AI, data engineering, Git, IBM watsonx.governance, image processing, LangGraph, ML, NLP, orchestration, Python, SDLC, solution architecture, system design, system integration, systems engineering, and testing.
