Principal Software Engineer - (Reston or Cambridge)

Location: United States (Remote); the role is associated with Reston or Cambridge. US citizenship is required, and candidates must be eligible to undergo the required security clearance process.

Base salary for US-based candidates: $169,300–$304,700/year. Compensation outside the US varies.

What you will do

• Architect complex distributed software systems and create technical blueprints that reduce operational toil.
• Define development standards, pull-request review frameworks, and Service Level Objectives for resilient systems.
• Design deployment safety pipelines, continuous integration workflows, and automated testing frameworks for secure production releases.
• Act as the Tier-3 escalation authority for complex application failures and lead postmortem reviews.
• Mentor engineering teams on system design and support an inclusive, collaborative technical culture.

Requirements

• 12 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree.
• Experience developing full-stack web applications, APIs, and microservices in Linux or Unix environments.
• Expertise in one or more of Python, JavaScript, SQL, Ruby, or PHP.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, containerization, automated testing, and revision-control workflows.
• Strong grounding in SRE principles, including SLI/SLO tracking, toil reduction, and root-cause analysis.
• Experience creating architectural blueprints, evaluating emerging technologies, and mentoring engineering peers.
• US citizenship and eligibility to undergo the required security clearance process; an active clearance is not required.
