Staff Site Reliability Engineer (AWS/Kubernetes)

Location: Remote US

Base salary: $156,000–$275,000 per year across US locations; bonus, equity, and benefits are excluded.

What you will do

• Set multi-quarter technical strategy for reliability, infrastructure, and platform tooling, and lead complex cross-cutting architecture initiatives.
• Define SLI, SLO, and error-budget practices; improve observability, monitoring, alerting, incident response, post-mortems, capacity planning, disaster recovery, and failure-mode testing.
• Design, build, and operate AWS infrastructure with Terraform, Kubernetes, and GitOps workflows using ArgoCD and Atlantis.
• Build governed AI gateways for model routing with access controls, audit trails, secure data connectors, PII guardrails, and scoped data access.
• Lead cloud and LLM cost optimization through right-sizing, spot instances, cost attribution, usage metering, budgeting, and cost-aware routing.
• Build internal tools, CI/CD pipelines, self-service platforms, and automation that improve developer productivity and eliminate toil.

Requirements

• 10+ years of full-time software engineering experience in relevant SRE, infrastructure, platform, DevOps, or backend roles, including significant experience operating production systems at scale.
• Staff-level impact demonstrated through leading complex, multi-team infrastructure or reliability initiatives from ambiguity to delivery and influencing technical direction beyond the immediate team.
• Strong coding skills in Golang, Python, or TypeScript, with knowledge of design patterns, code reviews, and testing.
• Deep hands-on experience with AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, PostgreSQL, CI/CD systems, and observability tooling such as DataDog.
• Hands-on experience implementing SLIs and SLOs, leading incident response, and running effective post-mortems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, including design documentation, explaining trade-offs to executives, and building consensus across teams.
• Ability to remove systemic toil and balance reliability, delivery speed, and cost.

Nice to have

• Experience building or operating LLM toolchains, including AI gateways, model routing with Bedrock or Anthropic, governance frameworks, PII scanning, and audit trails.
• Experience building Kubernetes operators.
• Experience leading cloud cost optimization or building usage metering systems.
• Experience in regulated industries such as insurance, fintech, or healthcare, or with compliance frameworks such as SOC 2.
• Experience collaborating with globally distributed teams.
