Engineering Manager (Conversational AI)

Location: Hybrid; Palo Alto, California, United States, with on-site collaboration in the Toronto office Monday–Wednesday.

Compensation: CA$154K–CA$195K plus equity.

What you will do

• Lead and contribute hands-on to the Conversational AI engineering team building Alfie, hirify.global’s conversational AI assistant.
• Build, review, and ship APIs, data models, microservices, and conversational interfaces for an LLM-based product.
• Use Claude Code and other LLM harnesses to improve planning, development, review, experimentation, and delivery.
• Partner with product management, data teams, and the AI Architect to turn product goals and technical direction into an executable roadmap.
• Recruit, mentor, and develop engineers while maintaining high standards for observability, stability, and product quality.
• Collaborate in person in the Toronto office Monday–Wednesday to support team cohesion and cross-functional problem solving.

Requirements

• 3+ years of formal engineering management experience leading a team of engineers.
• Experience changing team practices through AI tooling, including the ability to explain which previous practices were removed and why.
• Ability to operate backend microservices in TypeScript or Python with Postgres and AWS, deployed on Kubernetes.
• Experience designing clean contracts and APIs that support agentic workflows.
• Hands-on experience with LLM-based and agentic systems, including prompt design, tool or function calling, multi-step agent reasoning, and evaluation.
• Experience shaping both assistant behavior and how that behavior is presented to users.
• Track record of delivering customer-facing SaaS products focused on metrics-driven growth, conversion, and user experience.
• Ability to explain complex technical and AI-related trade-offs through actionable plans for leadership and cross-functional partners.
