Lead AI Engineer

Location: Remote in the United States, with travel required to the Richardson, Texas office one week per month.

Salary: USD $190,578–$249,400 per year.

What you will do

• Own end-to-end architecture for AI products and platforms, including model selection, multi-agent orchestration, workflow patterns, RAG, hybrid search, knowledge graphs, and semantic caching.
• Design and lead shared AI services, SDKs, reusable RAG pipelines, ingestion frameworks, AI copilot components, and modular agentic backend capabilities.
• Establish standards for prompt versioning, model and retrieval evaluation, observability, logging, incident response, and production AI practices.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership to AI Engineers, ML Engineers, and Data Scientists through architecture guidance, design and code reviews, and mentoring.
• Partner with Product, Design, Business, security, privacy, and legal stakeholders to identify use cases, define roadmaps and success criteria, and deliver AI initiatives.
• Lead evaluation, governance, responsible AI, performance, reliability, scalability, and cost optimization, including SLAs/SLOs, model routing, distillation, caching, and build-versus-buy decisions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a related field.
• Seven years of experience in the job offered or as a Data Scientist, Software Engineer, ML Engineer, or an acceptable alternate occupation, including two years in a senior or leadership role.
• Production experience with Python and TypeScript or JavaScript.
• Experience designing and operating distributed, cloud-native systems using GCP, Azure, or AWS; containerization and orchestration with Docker or Kubernetes; and modern CI/CD.
• Experience with coding assistants such as Windsurf, Cursor, or Codex, and with architecting and shipping complex AI systems to production at scale.
• Experience leading multi-engineer initiatives, mentoring others, and making data-driven tradeoffs between speed, quality, and cost.
• Advanced experience with LLM application design, including prompting, tool use, function calling, multi-agent workflows, context engineering, grounding strategies, and multi-turn orchestration.
• Advanced experience with RAG architectures, vector databases, retrieval optimization, AI observability, monitoring, and evaluation frameworks.
• Ability to build and maintain LLM evaluation harnesses with dataset creation, automated benchmarking, regression testing, and output quality analysis.
• Hands-on experience with LLM fine-tuning, including SFT, PEFT/LoRA, and distillation; ability to prototype AI proofs of concept and translate ambiguous business problems into validated technical solutions.
• Ability to interpret scientific research, extract actionable insights from AI/ML papers, and implement state-of-the-art techniques.
• Ability to communicate complex AI concepts to executives and non-technical partners and present AI strategy and progress to leadership and cross-functional teams.
