Principal Software Engineer, Data

Location: Full-time in-office attendance in Mountain View, CA or McLean, VA, United States, five days per week.

Annual base salary: $209,000–$275,000 USD in the U.S.; $226,000–$296,000 USD in Mountain View, CA. Base salary excludes bonus, equity, incentives, and benefits.

What you will do

• Assess the existing relational, event-driven, graph-based, and API data landscape, including technical debt and operational bottlenecks.
• Own a multi-phase architectural roadmap for evolving legacy systems into scalable, API-first, event-driven, cloud-native data architectures.
• Design and implement foundational data APIs, streaming pipelines, graph data models, encryption and data protection services, and automated data lifecycle systems.
• Partner with executive leadership, product, security, compliance, and application engineering teams to align data architecture with identity verification, fraud prevention, analytics, and AI/ML goals.
• Define data modeling, metadata, lineage, schema, access, governance, retention, privacy, and compliance standards.
• Lead architectural reviews, prototypes, migrations, database performance optimization, and mentoring for Staff and Senior engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering, distributed systems, and data architecture at a large-scale SaaS, fintech, identity, or platform company.
• Experience diagnosing complex brownfield engineering and business environments and executing multi-quarter technical transformation roadmaps.
• Deep expertise designing and evolving large-scale architectures across relational databases, distributed event-driven systems, and graph or NoSQL data stores.
• Strong proficiency in one or more of Go, Java, Python, Ruby, or Rust, plus advanced SQL.

Nice to have

• Experience leading large-scale data migrations, decomposing monolithic databases, and establishing API-first boundaries and data contracts without disrupting production traffic.
• Expertise with PostgreSQL, AlloyDB, CloudSQL, and graph databases such as Neo4j or Amazon Neptune.
• Experience with Google Pub/Sub, Kafka, Dataflow, Temporal, GCP, or AWS for event-driven platforms and real-time streaming pipelines.
• Experience designing governance, retention, privacy, and encryption frameworks for regulated environments involving FedRAMP, NIST, SOC2, or GDPR.
• Fluency with AI-assisted engineering workflows and data architectures supporting AI/ML and analytics.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication, including explaining architectural trade-offs to technical and executive audiences.
