Associate/Senior Editor, BMC Health Services Research and BMC Series Medical Journal

Location: Hybrid role based in New York, NY or Philadelphia, PA, United States

US annualized base salary: $80,000 for Associate Editor or $95,000 for Senior Editor.

What you will do

• Develop data-driven journal strategies for BMC Health Services Research and a BMC series medical journal.
• Commission and develop reviews, collections, and supplements while building relationships with the scientific community.
• Handle manuscripts, evaluate scientific rigor, novelty, relevance, and impact, and make evidence-based editorial decisions.
• Investigate research integrity cases, resolve editorial issues, and contribute to editorial policy development.
• Recruit, onboard, train, and engage Editorial Board Members; lead board meetings and strategic discussions.
• Partner with marketing and internal teams on content promotion, website content, blogs, social media, conferences, and networking events.

Requirements

• PhD or MD, or equivalent, in health services research, public health, or a biomedical research discipline.
• Substantial prior editorial experience in scientific publishing is required for consideration at Senior Editor level.
• Ability to critically evaluate scientific content and assess manuscripts for rigor, novelty, relevance, and impact.
• Strong decision-making skills and ability to make balanced, objective, evidence-based editorial decisions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a customer-focused approach.
• Ability to build productive relationships with diverse stakeholders and demonstrate strong interpersonal awareness.
• Collaborative experience working effectively across teams and functions.
• Strong organizational, prioritization, and project management skills focused on operational excellence.
• Resilience, ability to manage competing priorities, navigate ambiguity, adapt to changing business needs, and balance short-term deadlines with long-term strategic goals.
