TL;DR
Data Center Electrical Engineer – Design (AI infrastructure): Designing and delivering electrical architectures for high-density AI data centers across the US, from utility service entrances and substations through rack power, with an accent on high-voltage distribution, critical power systems, and modular prefabrication. Focus on running power-system studies, standardizing offsite-manufactured electrical assemblies, reviewing partner designs, and supporting commissioning across concurrent projects.
Location: Remote-friendly, United States; staff are expected to be in one of Anthropic’s offices at least 25% of the time. The role requires approximately 10–25% travel for design reviews, vendor and partner meetings, factory witness testing, site visits, commissioning, and startup.
Annual salary: $320,000–$405,000 USD
Company
Anthropic builds reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems and develops large-scale infrastructure for frontier AI models.
What you will do
Lead electrical design for critical data center infrastructure across the US portfolio, including utility interfaces, substations, medium- and high-voltage distribution, generators, UPS systems, switchgear, transformers, busway, grounding, and rack power.
Develop and maintain the electrical basis of design, reference architectures, technical specifications, and data center hall power distribution layouts.
Run and validate short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, load flow, and power quality studies to guide topology, redundancy, equipment selection, and protection settings.
Drive prefabricated and modular electrical delivery through modular skids, e-houses, prefabricated power assemblies, offsite manufacturing interfaces, and temporary-to-permanent power sequencing.
Coordinate with utilities, interconnection operators, authorities, vendors, manufacturers, supply chain, hardware and compute teams, build partners, A/E firms, and consultants.
Review and approve design packages, calculations, submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, field changes, commissioning procedures, and factory acceptance testing while managing concurrent projects across multiple geographies.
Requirements
10+ years of electrical engineering experience in mission-critical facilities, including substantial data center or high-availability electrical distribution design from concept through construction documents and commissioning support.
Deep familiarity with US electrical codes and standards, including NFPA 70/NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE standards such as 1584, and UL/ANSI standards such as UL 891 and UL 1558, plus utility interconnection processes.
Hands-on experience producing and reviewing electrical construction documents, single-line diagrams, and equipment specifications, and interpreting data center floor plans and technical layouts.
Strong knowledge of power distribution and cooling infrastructure in high-availability data centers.
Fluency in power systems analysis and experience running or critically reviewing studies in SKM, ETAP, or EasyPower.
Understanding of critical power topologies including 2N, N+1, distributed redundant, and block redundant configurations, with the ability to explain reliability and cost trade-offs.
Working knowledge of HV/MV substations, onsite generation, and energy storage integration.
Hands-on experience with prefabricated and modular data center electrical infrastructure, including modular skids, e-houses, offsite manufacture, and onsite assembly interfaces.
Experience working directly with electrical equipment manufacturers, A/E consultants, and contractors, plus clear communication with technical and non-specialist stakeholders.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience. PE licensure is valued but not required.
Nice to have
Experience owning an electrical basis of design or reference architecture for a hyperscale or large colocation program across multiple sites or external build partners.
Experience building modular prefabricated electrical or mechanical data center products and driving designs toward offsite manufacturing.
Background in medium-/high-voltage distribution, onsite generation, or BESS integration.
Exposure to liquid-cooled infrastructure and its implications for electrical room layout and load distribution.
Experience at a hyperscaler, colocation provider, or MEP consultancy serving large data center clients.
Direct experience delivering data centers in multiple US markets, including Virginia, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, or Oregon.
Culture & Benefits
Flexible working hours, generous vacation and parental leave, competitive benefits, and optional equity donation matching.
Collaborative environment focused on high-impact AI research, communication, and frequent research discussions.
