Senior Manager, Packaging Development (Beauty)

Location: New York, NY; hybrid. Domestic and international travel is required as needed for supplier meetings, development trials, and production support.

Estimated annual pay range: $122,000–$158,000 per year.

What you will do

• Own packaging development across color cosmetics, skincare, sets, and fragrance programs from concept and feasibility through tooling, qualification, commercialization, and launch.
• Translate creative and product requirements into manufacturable packaging solutions balancing customer experience, functionality, quality, cost, sustainability, and manufacturing capabilities.
• Lead feasibility assessments, packaging specifications, technical drawings, tolerances, performance requirements, risk assessments, FMEA, and qualification testing.
• Manage multiple complex programs, milestones, dependencies, approvals, supplier deliverables, tooling trials, line trials, and initial production runs.
• Partner with Product Development, Creative, Marketing, Project Management, Supply Chain, Sourcing, Quality, suppliers, and contract manufacturers.
• Improve packaging workflows, specifications, bills of materials, change control, existing packaging, root-cause investigations, and sustainability opportunities in Specright.

Requirements

• 7+ years of progressive experience in packaging development or packaging engineering, including substantial experience in prestige beauty.
• Expertise in packaging for color cosmetics, skincare, and fragrance, including their distinct technical and performance requirements.
• Experience independently leading complex packaging programs from concept through commercialization, including custom components and tooling.
• Strong knowledge of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging materials, manufacturing processes, decoration methods, dispensing systems, and assembly, including fragrance bottles, pumps, collars, and closures.
• Experience reviewing engineering drawings, specifications, dimensional tolerances, tooling designs, and component performance requirements.
• Working knowledge of compatibility, functionality, transit, and manufacturing line validation testing.
• Experience leading supplier and contract manufacturer problem-solving, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
• Strong project management skills, including prioritization of multiple programs, dependency management, and clear communication of tradeoffs.
• Experience improving development processes and maintaining packaging specifications, bills of materials, and change records in a PLM or specification management system.
• Ability to influence cross-functional decisions, mentor colleagues, and collaborate with internal and external partners.
• Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.

• Familiarity with CAD software, SolidWorks, rapid prototyping, and 3D printing.
