Senior Packaging and Product Device Engineer

Location: Somerset, NJ; full-time onsite role with 5 days in the office. Relocation assistance is available for candidates open to moving to the area.

What you will do

• Manage the complete packaging development process, including design creation, prototyping, testing, production samples, and packaging specifications.
• Troubleshoot packaging design, material, equipment, and process issues and implement practical, timely, and cost-effective solutions.
• Analyze product drawings and specifications to define physical, handling, environmental, safety, and material requirements.
• Develop packaging test plans and conduct experiments, shipping tests, plant trials, and packaging line trials to validate performance.
• Evaluate packaging suppliers and equipment, establish supplier standards, and collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, product development, R&D, and external suppliers.
• Optimize packaging for manufacturability, cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, regulatory compliance, and formula-packaging compatibility.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or packaging engineering and 5+ years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging are required.
• Experience with device-based packaging is required.
• Knowledge of packaging design validation standards such as ISO and ASTM, as well as drafting and specification standards.
• Proficiency with CAD software, 3D modeling, SolidWorks, 3D printing processes and equipment, and rapid prototyping.
• Experience designing and developing packaging from scratch and applying innovative or creative packaging design.
• Experience in a regulated FDA environment and with hazardous goods, including lithium batteries, plug-in devices, and fragrance solvents.
• Knowledge of GMPs, quality and safety requirements, ingredient performance and equipment interactions, statistical process control, critical control points, and new product scale-up dynamics.
• Problem-solving, decision-making, process improvement, quality improvement, organizational, prioritization, and independent working skills; ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication, facilitation, presentation, and project management skills; proficiency with office suite or Google equivalent applications, including Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
• Experience collaborating with R&D or chemistry teams on formula-packaging compatibility.

Nice to have

• Experience with personal fragrance, home scent categories such as laundry care and air or car fresheners, and/or OTC beauty.
• ISO 9001 certification, such as CQA, CQE, or CQIA.
• Project management certification.
