Engineering Manager - Energy

Location: London, United Kingdom; hybrid workplace. Remote-first policies allow working abroad for up to three weeks twice per tax year.

What you will do

• Co-lead an autonomous energy squad with a Product Manager in collaboration with UX and Data.
• Own technical decisions, design discussions, architecture validation, and alignment with engineering and product strategy.
• Set squad goals and OKRs, prioritize work, manage risks and blockers, and communicate progress against KPIs and milestones.
• Drive security, service-level objectives, on-call coverage, operational excellence, and regular metrics reviews.
• Hire, onboard, coach, develop, and support engineers through performance calibration and promotion reviews.
• Foster a healthy team culture, resolve interpersonal conflicts, communicate strategy, manage budgets, and represent the squad to senior leadership.

Requirements

• Knowledge or experience with gRPC, GraphQL, React, Kafka, Docker, and Kubernetes; Go experience is preferred but not essential.
• Experience leading technical design processes, facilitating design discussions, documenting decisions, evaluating trade-offs, and representing the team in cross-functional technical conversations.
• Experience validating architecture against real-world edge cases and complex domain variations, and identifying engineering best-practice improvements.
• Hands-on experience with AI development tools and AI-assisted software development.
• Experience defining team goals, driving prioritization, setting OKRs with Product Managers, and co-leading annual and quarterly planning.
• Experience identifying risks, mitigating them, improving delivery predictability, and sequencing or reducing scope to protect commitments.
• Experience establishing security and SLO practices, driving operational excellence, and leading metrics reviews.
• Experience managing, onboarding, training, developing, and coaching engineers, including participation in performance calibration and promotion reviews.
• Experience communicating strategy, developing domain knowledge beyond the happy path, handling complex multi-variant domains such as billing, pricing, identity, or claims, challenging ambiguous requirements, fostering healthy team dynamics, and collaborating cross-functionally.
