Packaging Engineer - Accessories and Service Parts (Automotive)

Annual base pay: $135,000–$203,000 USD in California

What you will do

• Build, lead, coach, and manage a small team of packaging engineers.
• Own the packaging strategy and roadmap for accessories and service parts, improving cost, damage rate, cube and freight efficiency, and sustainability.
• Define packaging standards, specifications, test protocols, and design guidelines for Slate parts, suppliers, and 3PLs.
• Develop customer-facing packaging and unboxing experiences that protect products and may also serve as installation guides or fixtures.
• Lead supplier and 3PL packaging readiness, validation using ISTA or equivalent, and approval of designs, die lines, and samples.
• Align Engineering, Supply Chain, Purchasing, Supplier Quality, Logistics/3PL, Product Management, Brand, and Digital/eCommerce from concept through launch and sustainment.

Requirements

• BS in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• 8–12+ years of packaging engineering experience for automotive or consumer products, including 3+ years leading engineers.
• Deep knowledge of packaging materials and standards, including ISTA, ASTM, and labeling requirements.
• Hands-on ability with CAD, die lines, and packaging testing to review and challenge designs.
• Experience building and developing teams through hiring, coaching, and performance management in a fast-moving environment.
• Demonstrated results reducing packaging cost, damage rate, and freight/cube, plus experience managing a tooling or development budget.
• Experience owning supplier-facing packaging guidelines, QC criteria, and validation programs across suppliers and 3PLs.
• Strong influence without authority across Engineering, Supply Chain, Purchasing, Product, Brand, suppliers, and senior leaders.
• Comfort working in startup environments, building playbooks, and contributing hands-on when needed.

• Experience with dual-use or install-aid packaging.
