Manager, Software Development Engineering - Search & IR

Location: United States of America, Eagan, Minnesota. Hybrid workplace; other listed locations include Frisco, Texas, and Toronto, Ontario.

Base compensation: $118,400–$219,800 USD for eligible US locations; $140,600–$190,600 CAD for Ontario, Canada. Annual bonus may also apply.

What you will do

• Lead the engineering lifecycle for Content Tools, including API design, implementation, testing, deployment, CLI and SDK exposure, CI/CD, evaluation infrastructure, and cloud operations.
• Manage and develop a team of 8 software engineers while contributing to architecture, system design, technical reviews, and delivery.
• Establish API-first contracts, schemas, ownership metadata, contribution workflows, quality gates, namespace governance, and tool lifecycle policies.
• Build IR evaluation infrastructure using representative datasets, automated regression checks, offline grading, online signals, and quality benchmarks.
• Own production operations, including SLOs, monitoring, caching, rate limiting, access controls, on-call rotations, and incident response.
• Partner with TR Labs, Product, and CoCounsel Engineering on agentic workflows, provenance, citation handling, MCP, and retrieval patterns.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 6+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years in technical leadership or engineering management.
• Experience designing and operating API-first systems consumed by multiple teams, with a product mindset for developer experience and internal customers.
• Proficiency in Python, software engineering fundamentals, API design, unit and integration testing, IR/evaluation testing, and CI/CD.
• Technical depth in complex systems, including design decomposition, trade-off analysis, and collaboration with Senior and Staff engineers, architects, and scientists.
• Experience governing shared platform infrastructure in distributed development models, including contribution standards, versioning, and cross-team coordination.
• Strong knowledge of information retrieval, including precision/recall trade-offs, hybrid search, citation networks, and document retrieval patterns.
• Experience leading teams with end-to-end production ownership, on-call responsibilities, SLO management, and incident response.
• Strong leadership, agile delivery, communication, and alignment-building skills across engineering, product, and science teams; awareness of AI ethics, content licensing, and responsible retrieval deployment.

Nice to have

• Experience building tools or APIs for agentic AI systems, including MCP or similar protocols.
• Legal technology, knowledge management, or other high-stakes information retrieval experience.
• Hands-on experience with Elasticsearch, Vespa, OpenSearch, semantic search, and structured search.
• Experience designing retrieval evaluation datasets, using IR metrics such as Precision, Recall, and NDCG, and integrating quality gates into CI/CD.
• Familiarity with content access control, policy-based entitlements, licensing enforcement, prompt engineering, tool description design, and agent invocation patterns.
