Expert Senior Manager, Engineering Excellence (AI)

Location: Hybrid, with in-office presence at least 3 days per week at a client location or Bain home office in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Silicon Valley, or Washington, DC; travel required 40–60%

Annual full-time salary: $258,425 in Atlanta, Boston, Texas, and Chicago; $293,500 in California, New York, Washington, DC, and Washington State. Additional compensation includes a discretionary annual performance bonus.

What you will do

• Lead client and internal engineering transformation initiatives across people, process, and technology, including AI-assisted productivity improvements.
• Provide technical guidance, mentor developers, and promote modern engineering practices and operational models.
• Architect, design, develop, document, test, and release robust, scalable applications and production-quality code.
• Design end-to-end AI agent systems, including reasoning loops, planning mechanisms, tool orchestration, and multi-agent architectures.
• Develop and optimize LLM-powered applications using advanced prompting, structured outputs, model routing, and RAG pipelines.
• Collaborate with clients, product, design, consulting, and engineering teams on architectures, data flows, integrations, build processes, and security needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience.
• Experience in an engineering role at a startup or fast-growing technology company, with increasing mastery and responsibility.
• 10+ years of full-stack development experience, including 6+ years of microservice API development with RESTful, GraphQL, or gRPC frameworks.
• 4+ years of consulting experience and 2+ years leading or managing development teams.
• 1+ years of experience with AI tools such as Cursor or Claude Code.
• Strong knowledge of development best practices, automated testing, CI/CD, data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, performance complexity, and computer architecture.
• Deep understanding of LLMs and transformer architectures, prompt engineering, structured prompting, reasoning control, tokenization, context-window limits, and cost optimization.
• Experience designing and deploying RAG systems and evaluating model performance beyond accuracy, including reasoning quality, hallucination rate, and task success.
• Strong Python proficiency for AI development and strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• Experience serving enterprise customers, including Fortune 500 or Global 1000 organizations.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure and a deep understanding of failover, high availability, and scalability.
• Ability to explain technical concepts and methodologies to colleagues and clients from other disciplines.
