R&D Mechanical Technical Specialist (Robotics)

Location: Waltham, MA, United States. Full-time onsite role; candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available.

What you will do

• Build complex prototype mechanical assemblies, including custom electric actuators, mechanisms, and robotic structures.
• Create test plans and procedures, identify nuanced mechanical issues, and recommend corrective actions to design engineers.
• Develop and document assembly processes, work techniques, tooling, and fixtures using mechanical CAD software.
• Modify and improve prototype robotics components and collaborate with robot engineering teams on new platforms.
• Support contract manufacturing opportunities and progress prototypes toward reproducible assemblies with quality control.
• Plan lab equipment, tools, and workspaces needed to build prototype robots.

Requirements

• At least 6 years of experience including hands-on mechanical expertise, such as automotive, motorsports, robotics, or aircraft repair.
• Expertise assembling, troubleshooting, and servicing complex mechanical and electromechanical systems.
• Experience developing processes and tooling or fixturing for first-article prototype builds with minimal engineering guidance.
• Ability to execute high-level project objectives quickly and autonomously.
• Basic CAD skills with Catia or Solidworks for opening assemblies and designing tooling and fixturing.
• Meticulous attention to detail, team-oriented thinking, collaboration, adaptability to changing priorities, and ability to learn quickly.
• Flexibility to occasionally work extended hours based on project deadlines and research demands.

Nice to have

• Prototype cable assembly and routing experience, including soldering, crimping, or overmolding.
• Fabrication skills such as welding or machining.
• Experience with electronics and electrical systems.
