Software Development Engineer (AI/ML)

Location: Herndon, Virginia, United States; onsite role

Base pay in the Washington, DC metropolitan area: $116,000–$154,000–$169,400 annually.

What you will do

• Design and implement efficient, flexible solutions for mission-critical applications.
• Participate across the full development lifecycle, from planning and requirements through design, implementation, testing, deployment, documentation, and maintenance.
• Test, troubleshoot, and patch vendor-provided software using software standards and processes.
• Develop analytics and derivative data products that help users extract meaningful knowledge.
• Identify, develop, and mature AI/ML and computer vision capabilities, including Automatic Target Recognition.
• Collaborate with R&D teams, engineers, clients, and users to transition successful technologies into broader use.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship and a current TS/SCI U.S. Government security clearance are required; willingness to obtain a CI Polygraph is required.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a related field; four additional years of experience may substitute for the degree, and a master’s degree may count as two additional years of experience.
• At least 4 years of professional experience in programming, software design, and/or development.
• Experience working with data in software applications, including extracting or transforming data for a feature or product.
• Familiarity with modern software development tools, DevSecOps practices, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Working proficiency in one multiparadigm programming language, preferably Python or C++.
• Working knowledge of Linux-based environments.
• Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and the ability to use emerging technologies to address mission challenges.
• Employment in cleared roles is contingent on verification of clearance status; certain roles may require U.S. person status under export control and ITAR requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience designing, developing, and deploying AI-native software products that transform large-scale geospatial data into actionable intelligence and mission-critical insights.
• Familiarity with designing, developing, testing, and deploying AI/ML or computer vision models across diverse data types.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, manage multiple priorities, troubleshoot routine issues, collaborate with teammates and users, and respond to technical feedback.
