Lead Software Engineer (C++)

Location: UK - Fareham; hybrid with 4 days per week in the Fareham office

What you will do

• Design, build, test, and maintain production-quality embedded software as a hands-on senior-level contributor.
• Promote CI/CD, automated testing, code quality, engineering standards, and delivery predictability.
• Review code and designs, contribute to architecture and technical direction, and resolve cross-team technical risks with Principal Engineers.
• Line-manage approximately eight engineers across multiple Scrum teams and disciplines, including one-to-ones, objectives, performance reviews, development plans, mentoring, and recruitment.
• Work with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Principal Engineers, testers, support teams, customers, and senior stakeholders.
• Build an inclusive, psychologically safe environment, address underperformance early, and champion strong engineering work.

Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related STEM subject, or equivalent professional experience.
• Commercial software development experience, ideally at Senior Engineer level or above.
• Strong technical depth in C++ for embedded environments, with hands-on CI/CD, automated testing, and AI-assisted development tools.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams and delivering software from requirements through design, build, test, and release.
• Experience diagnosing difficult customer-reported faults, handling production incidents, leading or contributing to blameless root-cause analysis, and preventing recurring field failures.
• Ability to break down ambiguous requirements, manage scope and quality risks, deliver against hard deadlines, and make visible trade-offs.
• Experience working with testers, product owners, support teams, or customers to complete releases.
• Experience mentoring or coaching junior engineers, giving and receiving difficult feedback, resolving technical or priority disagreements, and representing engineering topics to stakeholders and senior management.
• Right to work in the UK required. The role requires eligibility to apply for and obtain the appropriate export-control licence for regulated technology or technical data under US ITAR/EAR regulations.
