What you will do

  • Develop high-resolution regional modeling applications within the coupled Unified Forecast System.
  • Maintain and improve the accuracy and efficiency of planetary boundary layer parameterizations.
  • Improve physical parameterizations and earth system model components across UFS applications.
  • Conduct scientific experiments involving atmospheric physics, cloud microphysics, and air-sea interactions.
  • Evaluate model results with MetPlus, in-situ observations, satellite observations, and large scientific datasets.
  • Collaborate with community developers on weather and climate modeling across scales.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, geophysics, applied mathematics, or a related physical science field.
  • Advanced knowledge of physics parameterization for earth system modeling applications.
  • Advanced skills with modern and object-oriented programming languages, such as Fortran and Python.
  • Proficiency with GitHub/Git and modern software development practices.
  • Experience working in a UNIX environment, using shell scripting languages, and running complex jobs.
  • Familiarity with NetCDF and GRIB2 data formats and experience analyzing large scientific datasets.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a team and communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder and must have lived in the United States for 3–5 years before applying.

Nice to have

  • Experience developing or applying Atmospheric Single Column Models.
  • Experience with operational numerical weather prediction or operational forecasting environments.
  • Experience testing and evaluating single-column and three-dimensional models using conventional and satellite observations.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time work in an independent and collaborative environment within the EMC Physics and Dynamics Division.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and life insurance.
  • Matching 401(k) contribution.
