Sr Engineering Manager, API Platform (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Santa Clara, California, USA; office attendance required 3 days per week.

Base salary: $212,000–$265,000 USD annually, excluding bonus, equity, commissions, and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the vision and roadmap for the API Platform and developer tooling, aligning technical direction with organizational goals and industry practices.
• Standardize, design, and govern APIs while improving developer experience and productivity across engineering teams and products.
• Direct architecture and standards for product and provisioning APIs, ensuring distributed state changes are reliable, reproducible, and traceable.
• Manage and coach Senior Staff Engineers and other senior technical contributors while fostering collaboration and professional growth.
• Oversee delivery of reliable microservices, workflow workers, and SDKs across Java, Go, and Python using gRPC, Temporal, Postgres, and Redis.
• Partner with Product Management and Security and promote shared ownership of architecture, datasets, and foundational services.

Requirements

• Demonstrated curiosity and active exploration of AI tools, with a history of integrating new technologies into workflows and problem-solving.
• 8+ years of engineering leadership experience, including 3+ years managing technical teams for developer tooling, API platforms, or cloud-based systems across Java, Go, and JavaScript ecosystems.
• 10+ years of overall software engineering experience, including hands-on API and SDK design for containerized environments such as Kubernetes and Docker.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems, including caching, queues, and pub/sub architectures, plus experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Advanced understanding of API-first design and standards including OpenAPI/Swagger, REST, JSON, and Authn/z.
• Ability to operate in ambiguity, take ownership, solve complex problems, collaborate with high trust, and actively seek feedback and growth.

Nice to have

• Practical experience applying modern AI tools to the software development lifecycle.
• Experience in cloud security and networking.
• Experience driving workflow automation and developer productivity practices with open-source or proprietary tools.
• Advocacy for DevSecOps, CI/CD, and Infrastructure-as-Code across large engineering organizations.
