Machine Learning Engineer 2 (AI)

Location: Remote - US; not eligible for hiring in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, or surrounding areas. Occasional travel may be required for project or team meetings.

Estimated annual pay: $128,560–$160,700 in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington D.C.; $136,000–$170,000 in New York, New Jersey, Washington State, or California outside the San Francisco Bay Area. Other locations are discussed during hiring.

What you will do

• Build extraction pipelines that transform raw conversation data into structured customer memory using LLM prompts and schemas.
• Own retrieval systems using embeddings, vector search, and ranking to return customer information in milliseconds.
• Contribute to evaluation systems, benchmarks, quality metrics, and regression gates.
• Diagnose production issues across ingestion, extraction, and indexing using logs, metrics, and traces.
• Partner with Product and ML teams to translate customer problems into system changes and evaluation criteria.

Requirements

• Experience building backend services and ability to learn new languages, frameworks, and tools as needed.
• Ability to investigate system behavior in production and operate services with rigor and accountability.
• Experience with evaluation or quality-measurement systems, such as regression detection or quality metrics, or willingness to learn.
• Solid observability practices, including structured logging, metrics, and debugging distributed systems in production.
• Fluency with AI-assisted development tools for code generation, review, or debugging, applied with deliberate direction and critical thinking.

Nice to have

• Experience with Go and/or Python.
• Experience with event-streaming systems such as Kafka.
• Experience building LLM-backed products.
• Practical ML experience, including building, evaluating, or productionizing models.
