TL;DR
Control Systems Architect – IFE (Fusion Energy/Industrial Control): Defining and developing the control system architecture for an inertial fusion energy power plant with an accent on safety, real-time and supervisory control, network segmentation, precision timing, and plant data capture. Focus on specifying interfaces and requirements, evaluating control platforms, prototyping testbeds, and solving first-of-a-kind controls challenges across laser, fusion chamber, fuel processing, and power conversion systems.
Location: Full-time onsite role based at the headquarters in Denver, Colorado; travel 10–20% between the Denver headquarters and the future plant site.
Salary: $155,000–$182,000 per year.
Company
hirify.global develops inertial fusion energy technology and laser architecture for fusion power plants supporting global decarbonization.
What you will do
Define and maintain the fusion power plant control system architecture across safety, real-time, and supervisory control layers.
Develop network segmentation, precision timing and triggering, plant data capture, architecture descriptions, and control narratives.
Define control requirements and interface definitions for major plant systems and carry them through design reviews and change control.
Design control and instrumentation elements including I/O and signal definitions, control sequences, interlocks, and operating modes.
Evaluate control platforms, protocols, and standards, and develop prototypes or testbeds to reduce architecture risk.
Support trade studies, technical analyses, design reviews, staffing, and schedule planning for the control system scope.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field.
Typically 10+ years of relevant control systems engineering experience for large, multi-subsystem facilities such as power plants, process plants, accelerators, large laser facilities, or research facilities, including ownership of system-level or architecture design.
Working knowledge of industrial control architectures including PLC or DCS, safety instrumented systems, SCADA/HMI, industrial networks, and plant historians.
Experience developing control requirements, interface control documents, control narratives, and architecture descriptions through formal design reviews.
Ability to work independently on complex, loosely defined problems and communicate architecture decisions clearly to engineers, scientists, and leadership.
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident with a current Green Card, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Nice to have
Advanced degree in a related field.
Experience with nuclear or other licensed facilities, safety classification, defense in depth, and instrumentation and control qualification.
Experience with functional safety lifecycle work under IEC 61508/61511, SIL allocation, and cause-and-effect design.
Experience with precision timing and triggering, high-speed data acquisition, or pulsed power controls.
Experience with OT cybersecurity under IEC 62443 and segregated control network design.
Hands-on experience with Beckhoff TwinCAT, Siemens, Rockwell, or EPICS-class control platforms, and Python or LabVIEW for test automation.
Culture & Benefits
Onsite work at the Denver headquarters with 10–20% travel to the future plant site.
Medical, dental, and vision coverage; life insurance; short- and long-term disability; and paid parental leave.
401(k) with company match of up to 6% and equity for eligible employees.
Flexible paid time off, paid sick time, 13 company-paid holidays, and an annual paid company shutdown.
Equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace.
