Senior Chemist (Paints & Coatings)

Location: Onsite in Mt. Holly, North Carolina, USA; travel up to 30%, including customer visits and occasional international travel.

What you will do

• Lead paints and coatings application-development projects, translating customer requirements and market needs into technical solutions and product opportunities.
• Design and execute laboratory experiments to optimize formulations, evaluate coating performance, and demonstrate specialty-additive benefits.
• Benchmark products against competitors and generate technical data, recommendations, presentations, and product-positioning materials.
• Serve as a technical contact for customers and commercial teams, investigating formulation challenges and supporting visits, demonstrations, evaluations, and trials.
• Collaborate with global R&D teams to adapt products for the Americas market and support commercialization.
• Manage projects through laboratory development, validation, and commercialization; coordinate testing and mentor less experienced laboratory personnel.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemistry or a related scientific field.
• At least five years of relevant experience in the paints and coatings industry, preferably in application development, performance testing, or customer-facing technical service; seven to ten years is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of coatings chemistry, formulation principles, application methods, performance testing, and characterization techniques.
• Ability to independently manage technical development projects, troubleshoot customer challenges, and communicate technical recommendations.
• Strong collaboration and presentation skills.
• Ability to work onsite in Mt. Holly in a hands-on laboratory environment and travel up to 30%.

Nice to have

• Experience with waterborne, architectural, or industrial coatings and functional additives such as surfactants, wetting agents, dispersants, or emulsifiers.
• Experience supporting commercialization, working with international R&D teams, or mentoring junior technical personnel.
