Head of Engineering (AWS)

What you will do

• Lead the engineering organisation, own technical strategy, and establish engineering standards and best practices.
• Act as a hands-on architect and contributor by designing systems, writing and reviewing code, and unblocking delivery for digital asset and AI initiatives.
• Implement security requirements and recommendations across the multi-account AWS organisation in partnership with the Head of Security and security team.
• Own AWS architecture and operations, including reliability, cost management, disaster recovery, incident investigation, root-cause analysis, and operational readiness.
• Define technical solutions and delivery priorities with Product Managers, Architects, and stakeholders.
• Manage budgets, cloud expenditure, vendors, technical debt, hiring, onboarding, and development of Engineering Managers and Architects.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in senior technical leadership roles.
• Hands-on experience designing systems and writing or reviewing code as an individual contributor.
• Proven experience leading Engineering Managers, Architects, and multiple engineering teams.
• Strong AWS experience, including multi-account organisations, infrastructure as code, networking, identity and access management, and cloud security.
• Experience partnering with security teams and converting security requirements and audit findings into engineering changes, with knowledge of cybersecurity, compliance, risk management, and data protection.
• Production experience in digital assets or AI, including blockchain, DLT, tokenisation, custody, wallets, machine learning, or LLM-based applications. Depth in one area with genuine curiosity in the other is sufficient.
• Expertise in software architecture, system design, microservices, distributed systems, scalable SaaS platforms, and disaster recovery.
• Experience in fintech, financial services, or other regulated platforms.
• Experience defining technology strategy, architecture roadmaps, and engineering standards aligned with business objectives.
• Experience managing technology budgets, cloud expenditure, vendor relationships, technology investments, engineering organisation scaling, and technical debt.
• Strong strategic thinking, communication, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with payment, messaging, or banking technology providers and their operating models.
• Experience with payments, SWIFT financial messaging standards and infrastructure, or banking integrations.
• Experience with financial services compliance and regulatory frameworks such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
• Experience with both digital assets and AI, or applying AI in financial services.
