Staff Software Engineer (AI/Healthtech)

Location: Hybrid position based in Boston, MA, US. Relocation benefits are not available.

Salary: $146,250–$224,250 per year.

PathAI develops AI-powered pathology technology to improve disease diagnosis and treatment, including the AISight digital pathology platform.

What you will do

• Own the architecture of major AISight platform areas and drive technical strategy against the product roadmap.
• Lead complex, multi-team initiatives from ambiguous problem definition through production, including technical design, risk identification, and trade-off decisions.
• Write production code for critical and technically demanding parts of the system.
• Set engineering standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, performance, and development tooling.
• Collaborate with product, design, machine learning, infrastructure, QA, and regulatory teams to deliver reliable software for a regulated medical-device environment.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, develop technical leadership, support hiring and onboarding, and explain technical concepts to customers and stakeholders.

Requirements

• BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of full lifecycle software development experience, including significant time in a senior or technical lead role.
• Experience architecting and shipping large-scale production systems and leading technical initiatives across team boundaries.
• Deep expertise in either backend or frontend development, with working proficiency in the other area.
• Backend expertise may include Python applications and APIs with Django or FastAPI, data modeling, PostgreSQL, and distributed or event-driven systems.
• Frontend expertise may include complex, performant web applications using Vue, React, or an equivalent modern JavaScript framework, including state management, frontend architecture, and UX quality.
• Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
• Hands-on experience building and operating systems on a cloud platform, preferably AWS.
• Ability to influence technical decisions through clear writing, sound judgment, and collaboration, with excellent communication skills for distributed teams and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience building software in a regulated environment such as FDA, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, HIPAA, or CE-IVDR, or experience in healthtech.
• Experience with medical imaging, digital pathology, or large image and data visualization, including whole-slide image viewers, WebGL, or canvas rendering.
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD tooling such as GitLab CI.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code frameworks such as Terraform or CDK.
• Experience integrating machine learning models or AI-powered features into production applications.
