TL;DR
Senior Embedded Linux Engineer (Embedded Linux): Designing and maintaining custom embedded Linux distributions, BSPs, bootloaders, kernels, drivers, and device software with an accent on hardware bring-up, performance, security, and cross-functional device debugging. Focus on solving boot, connectivity, power, memory, and hardware-adjacent problems across Cortex-A and Cortex-M platforms.
Location: Fully remote across Europe; optional pet-friendly office in Warsaw. Core team hours are 10:00–18:00 CET, with occasional scheduled calls with US-based clients up to approximately 20:00.
Salary: 120–180 PLN net/hour on a B2B contract, depending on experience.
Company
hirify.global designs and co-creates connected physical and digital products, including wearables, smart audio, health-tech hardware, and IoT devices, for clients such as Oura, Bose, Neurable, and McIntosh.
What you will do
Design and maintain custom embedded Linux distributions using Yocto or Buildroot.
Bring up new hardware platforms and debug issues from schematics through software alongside hardware engineers.
Develop BSPs and bootloaders, customize the Linux kernel, and write or debug drivers for interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, and MIPI.
Write efficient C/C++ system services and applications and optimize boot time, memory usage, and power consumption.
Implement security features including Secure Boot and encrypted filesystems, and debug firmware and hardware-adjacent issues using JTAG/SWD, serial logs, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and vendor tools.
Collaborate with hardware, mobile, QA, backend, product, and client-side teams on requirements, architecture, testing, delivery, documentation, and engineering practices.
Requirements
4+ years of professional experience in embedded or firmware development.
Strong hands-on C/C++ experience for embedded systems.
Hands-on experience with Yocto Project or Buildroot, plus understanding of the Linux kernel, device drivers, and device tree.
Experience with embedded CI/CD, bootloaders—particularly U-Boot—and constraints involving timing, memory, peripherals, boot time, and power consumption.
Ability to debug firmware and hardware-adjacent issues with JTAG/SWD, serial logs, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and vendor tooling.
Ability to read schematics, datasheets, technical documentation, and errata; familiarity with UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO, or similar interfaces.
Proficiency with Bash and/or Python for automation and testing, plus solid Git and GitHub collaboration skills.
Written and spoken English at minimum B2, clear communication with engineers, PMs, QA, and clients, and a self-reliant, responsible problem-solving approach.
Nice to have
Experience with ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers and RTOS such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
Advanced Bluetooth/BLE experience, including GATT, pairing and bonding, connection parameters, throughput, power trade-offs, and secure OTA/DFU.
Networking experience with TCP/IP, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and MQTT.
Multimedia and audio experience with GStreamer, V4L2, ALSA, I2S, codecs, or graphics acceleration.
Security experience with Secure Boot, OP-TEE, TrustZone, encrypted filesystems, or cryptography.
Sensor integration and power profiling, containerization on embedded devices, experience with different platforms, and a personal GitHub or GitLab project portfolio.
Culture & Benefits
Freelance time-and-material engagement for an initial three-month mutual evaluation period, with a possibility of moving to a permanent contract and full benefits.
Flexible working hours, remote work across Europe, or work from the Warsaw office.
Up to 26 days of paid holidays and 10 days of sick leave on B2B; paid leave and medical benefits are not included during the freelance period.
Self-development budget of 2,000 PLN/year, private medical care, working equipment, knowledge-sharing activities, and an assigned onboarding buddy.
Structured ramp-up with progressively larger tasks, early feedback, and participation in both the Firmware & Hardware chapter and a project squad.
