Staff Machine Learning Engineer (Credit International ML)

Location: Remote Poland; the majority of roles can be located anywhere in Poland. Remote-first work may occasionally require in-person work at an Affirm office, and all new hires attend an in-person onboarding experience.

Salary: 365,000–485,000 zł base pay annually. Equity and additional reimbursable spending allowances may also apply.

What you will do

• Set technical strategy for the team over a year-long horizon and connect it to business-impacting projects.
• Build production-grade machine learning models that support credit lending decisions and repayment prediction across international markets.
• Collaborate with ML Platform, product, engineering, and risk leadership on scalable modeling capabilities for international expansion.
• Define and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes while setting code review and design standards.
• Mentor engineers, provide feedback and guidance, and bring clarity to complex and ambiguous problems.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience researching, designing, deploying, and operating large-scale, real-time machine learning systems; a relevant PhD can count for up to 2 years of experience.
• Strong Python skills and experience writing production-quality code.
• Experience building and evaluating models for tabular classification, including gradient-boosted decision trees such as LightGBM and XGBoost and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Experience with distributed data processing or parallel compute frameworks such as Spark or Ray.
• Experience with ML lifecycle tooling for training orchestration, experimentation, and model monitoring, such as Kubeflow, Airflow, or MLflow.
• Proficiency with AI-powered developer tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor.
• Strong engineering skills and the ability to provide hands-on technical leadership across code and architecture.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
