AI/ML Engineering Internship (AI)

Location: Ann Arbor, MI, US; additional locations in Orlando, FL; Minneapolis, MN; and Saint Paul, MN. Work is typically performed in a lab or office setting with exposure to manufacturing and testing environments. Travel may be required for technical presentations, testing, and integration. Candidates must be US citizens and able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.

What you will do

• Design, document, implement, debug, and test AI-enabled software components, including algorithms, knowledge bases, business logic, and LLM or agent integrations.
• Build and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable software for new and existing systems.
• Create plans and estimates for software features, understand system specifications, and recommend improvements to system-level decisions.
• Support cybersecurity activities and participate in integrated testing with industry partners, academia, customers, and sponsors.
• Contribute to project vision, milestones, documentation, and team initiatives while collaborating with engineers, project leads, and program managers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or degree in progress in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related discipline.
• General understanding of LLM-powered application development, including prompt and context engineering, agentic workflows, tool or function calling, retrieval-augmented generation, structured outputs, and model evaluation.
• Proficiency with TypeScript or JavaScript, Java, Vue.js or React, and REST APIs.
• Passion for artificial intelligence and the ability to analyze and solve challenging technical problems.
• Experience designing, integrating, evaluating, and debugging complex LLM-powered systems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to travel for technical presentations, testing, and integration.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance; candidates must be US citizens and maintain the required national security eligibility.
• Ability to work in lab or office settings, handle hardware and specialized equipment, sit at a desk for prolonged periods, and lift up to 15 pounds when required.

Nice to have

• Advanced degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related discipline.
• Software development experience in a similar scope, program, or environment.
• Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, HuggingFace, LLM inference servers such as TGI or vLLM, reasoning approaches, multimodal LLMs, multi-agent or swarming systems, and complex adaptive systems.
• Experience with C++, C#, SQL, or additional programming languages.
• Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, task tracking, or project management tools such as GitLab or Jira.
• Experience supporting defense or aerospace technology platforms, active-duty military experience, or an active US national security clearance.
