Lead Software Engineer (Python)

Location: Buffalo, New York, United States; hybrid schedule with four days onsite at Seneca One Buffalo and one day working from home.

Salary: $116,400–$194,000 annual (USD).

What you will do

• Provide day-to-day technical leadership while remaining actively involved in engineering enterprise applications, backend services, APIs, integrations, and data-driven solutions.
• Design and develop Python and Flask services using RESTful APIs, microservices, service-oriented architectures, and modular application patterns.
• Translate business and architectural requirements into technical designs and provide direction through development, testing, implementation, and production support.
• Lead technical-design and code-review sessions, establish engineering standards, mentor developers, and collaborate with Product Owners and Agile team members.
• Develop complex SQL queries, stored procedures, database integrations, and reusable engineering components; diagnose and optimize performance across application and database layers.
• Maintain GitLab workflows and CI/CD pipelines, integrate automated testing, code-quality checks, security scanning, and deployment automation, and drive root-cause resolution for defects and incidents.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree plus at least 7 years of systems analysis and/or application development experience, or a bachelor’s degree plus at least 5 years of such experience; alternatively, at least 9 years of combined education and/or relevant experience including at least 5 years of systems analysis and/or application development experience.
• Python, Flask, RESTful API design and development, microservices, object-oriented and modular application design, application integration, automated/unit testing, debugging, and troubleshooting.
• Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, or PostgreSQL; advanced SQL; SQL query optimization and performance tuning; and application/database integration.
• GitLab, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, build and deployment automation, automated testing, and code-quality and security integration.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Significant hands-on software-development experience owning complex application components or solutions, and experience as a Senior Developer, Lead Developer, or comparable technical leader.
• Strong understanding of the software-development lifecycle and Agile practices; ability to diagnose complex technical issues independently and communicate technical concepts to developers, architects, product partners, and management.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; experience with enterprise technology, security, risk, and change-management controls.
• Financial-services or banking technology experience; business-critical enterprise applications; high-volume or data-intensive systems; application modernization; and legacy-platform transformation.
• Secure software-development practices, production incident resolution, performance optimization, root-cause analysis, and experience across development, database, middleware/integration, and infrastructure boundaries.
• Exposure to cloud-native development, containerization, or orchestration platforms.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools productively while applying engineering judgment and review.
