Staff Software Engineer, Backend, Level 6

Location: Bellevue, Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto, or San Francisco, United States. Expected to work in an office 4+ days per week under hirify.global's "default together" policy.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and operate critical, scalable services including user identity, friend graph, and core persistence systems.
• Work across teams to understand product requirements, evaluate trade-offs, and deliver solutions for innovative products.
• Test, debug, and maintain high standards for correctness, security, and production readiness.
• Advocate for availability, scalability, operational excellence, and cost management best practices.
• Use AI tools and high-velocity engineering workflows while auditing generated output for architectural integrity, performance bottlenecks, and security risks.
• Participate in incident or hotfix investigation and resolution when needed.

Requirements

• Experience with backend services and distributed systems, including operating highly available systems at significant scale.
• Experience in at least one of: large-scale microservices and distributed systems; cloud computing and storage systems; infrastructure and large-scale system design; security; networking and data storage; or machine learning and natural language processing tools.
• Ability to independently execute medium-sized features spanning several weeks and multiple pull requests.
• Understanding of the operational aspects of backend systems and ability to collaborate effectively.
• Proficiency in, or strong aptitude for, using AI tools to streamline development and critically audit their output.
• Adaptability in learning and applying evolving AI systems and tools.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field such as computer science, or equivalent practical work experience.
• At least 9 years of post-Bachelor's software development experience, or a relevant Master's degree plus 8+ years of post-graduate experience, or a related PhD plus 5+ years of post-graduate experience.
• At least 1 year of technical leadership experience or experience acting as a domain expert for a technical organization.

Nice to have

• Experience with Java, C++, and/or Python.
• Experience with NoSQL solutions, Memcache or Redis, Kubernetes, or Google/AWS services.
