TL;DR
Storage Engineer (AI) (Distributed Storage/Linux Filesystems): Building Agent Drive, a distributed filesystem and durable storage layer for AI agent sandboxes with an accent on filesystem internals, replication, caching, and tenant isolation. Focus on designing multi-attach correctness, optimizing tail latency, debugging concurrency and partial-failure issues, and improving sandbox startup and resume performance.
Location: Hybrid in San Francisco or New York, United States
Compensation: $160K–$330K per year, plus equity
Company
Baseten builds infrastructure, developer tooling, and production inference platforms for AI companies, including distributed storage and sandbox infrastructure for agentic applications.
What you will do
Design and implement Agent Drive features, including metadata replication, volume placement, garbage collection, and FUSE client behavior.
Solve multi-attach correctness across FUSE mounts through cache coherency, dentry and inode invalidation, write ordering, and crash consistency.
Optimize read and write tail latency through page-cache strategy, writeback, prefetch, and metadata RPC batching.
Build tenant isolation, quota enforcement, blast-radius containment, and noisy-neighbor mitigation into the storage layer.
Own storage-related sandbox startup and resume performance, build durable block storage, and contribute to upstream open-source storage projects.
Build observability into each storage layer, lead storage incidents end to end, and turn incidents into permanent fixes.
Requirements
Strong systems programming background in Go, Rust, and/or C/C++, with comfort reading kernel code.
Deep understanding of Linux filesystem and storage internals, including VFS, page cache, dentry and inode caches, FUSE, the block I/O stack, fsync semantics, and crash consistency.
Hands-on experience building distributed storage systems, content-addressed storage, or large-scale caching infrastructure.
Experience profiling I/O, memory, and RPC bottlenecks and optimizing production tail latency.
Ability to debug correctness bugs that occur under concurrency or partial failure.
Ability to move quickly and own problems end to end on a small team.
Nice to have
Experience with distributed filesystems or object stores such as JuiceFS, CephFS, or S3-compatible storage, or contributions to those projects.
Knowledge of consensus and replication protocols such as Raft, leader leases, and quorum reads.
Experience with snapshot, clone, and copy-on-write filesystem features.
Experience operating multi-tenant storage with hard isolation requirements.
Familiarity with Linux performance tools such as eBPF, io_uring, perf, ftrace, and blktrace.
Culture & Benefits
Meaningful equity and competitive compensation.
Medical, dental, and vision insurance fully covered for employees and dependents in the United States.
Flexible PTO and a company-wide Winter Break from Christmas Eve through New Year's Day.
Paid parental leave and a fertility and family-building stipend through Carrot.
Company-facilitated 401(k) in the United States.
Exposure to ML startups and opportunities for learning and networking.
