Principal Software Engineer, Applied AI

Location: New York, NY, USA. Other location: Norwalk, CT, USA.

Salary: $180,000–$235,000 annually for positions in Connecticut and New York.

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, and deploy production-grade LLM and agentic applications, including multi-step agents, tool calling, retrieval-augmented generation, and workflow orchestration.
• Build evaluation frameworks, guardrails, monitoring, and operational capabilities to improve AI quality, safety, latency, and cost.
• Prototype emerging AI approaches and harden successful solutions for production while maintaining testing, CI/CD, security, and maintainability standards.
• Lead code reviews, design reviews, architecture discussions, and technical standards for AI-assisted development.
• Mentor engineers on agent design, prompting, task decomposition, output verification, and effective use of AI coding assistants.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, architects, and engineers; diagnose incidents, hallucinations, model regressions, prompt failures, and tool failures.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a relevant field.
• 8–10+ years of extensive experience developing, testing, and deploying high-quality, stable software.
• Hands-on experience building and deploying applications with LLMs and agentic technologies, including prompt engineering, RAG, function or tool calling, agent orchestration frameworks, and MCP or similar protocols.
• Hands-on familiarity with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code and the AI-driven development lifecycle, including planning, implementation, review, testing, and deployment.
• Strong software architecture and design skills for scalable, observable, and maintainable systems.
• Experience designing evaluation approaches for non-deterministic systems and improving quality using data.
• Ability to give and receive code review feedback, contribute forward-looking design ideas, mentor and coach engineers on AI coding assistants, and establish AI development standards and guardrails.
• Ability to articulate hirify.global’s business, client base, and how the work fits into the broader context.

Nice to have

• Experience with financial data, analytics, or investment workflows.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, containerization, and modern MLOps or LLMOps practices.
• Experience with model evaluation, fine-tuning, and latency or cost optimization.
• Experience building AI-assisted development tooling such as MCP servers, reusable skills, subagents, or agent configuration conventions.
• Contributions to AI developer tooling, internal platforms, or open-source projects.
• Ability to adapt to changing requirements and quickly learn new models, tools, and practices.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams and influence without direct authority.
• Track record of mentoring engineers and raising team standards.
