TL;DR
Embedded Engineer (Fusion Energy): Designing, integrating, and deploying custom electronics and firmware for laser and pulsed power control systems with an accent on mixed-signal PCB design, real-time embedded control, and board-level debugging. Focus on deterministic data acquisition, precision timing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and integrating electronics with PLC, EtherCAT, LabVIEW, and Python systems.

Location: Denver, Colorado; full-time onsite at the headquarters. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or nationals, current U.S. permanent residents, or lawfully admitted refugees or asylees.

Salary: $125,000–$150,000 per year.

Company

hirify.global develops inertial fusion energy and laser systems designed to support clean power generation and directed energy applications.

What you will do

  • Design, simulate, and lay out mixed-signal multilayer PCBs in Altium Designer, including schematics and component selection.
  • Develop and maintain C/C++ firmware for microcontroller and FPGA SoC boards, including drivers, board support, communication stacks, and application logic.
  • Own boards and firmware from requirements and design reviews through fabrication, bring-up, testing, installation, and commissioning.
  • Implement deterministic real-time control and data acquisition using interrupts, DMA, timing and trigger capture, and RTOS execution.
  • Integrate custom electronics with PLC and EtherCAT I/O, LabVIEW and Python data acquisition, and precision timing networks.
  • Develop automated test fixtures, hardware-in-the-loop and regression tests, document verification results, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and mentor junior engineers and interns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Typically 5+ years of relevant experience spanning embedded hardware and firmware development, or a PhD with relevant hands-on embedded experience.
  • Experience with analog and digital circuit design, mixed-signal PCB and power supply design, signal integrity, grounding, and EMI/EMC fundamentals.
  • Strong embedded C/C++ skills on bare-metal and RTOS targets, including register-level peripheral configuration, interrupts, DMA, and deterministic timing.
  • Ability to debug hardware and firmware together using JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
  • Working knowledge of ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers such as STM32, NXP, or TI, and at least one RTOS such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
  • Working knowledge of SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, and USB.
  • Experience with Git, structured design and code review processes, and communicating with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance if required by future program work; clearance is not required at hiring. Must meet the stated U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, refugee, or asylum status requirement.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Experience with high-voltage, pulsed-power, or laser electronics, including isolation, fiber-optic signaling, interlocks, and fault handling.
  • FPGA development with Xilinx/AMD, Intel, or Microchip devices, HDL, and high-speed ADC/DAC interfaces.
  • Embedded Linux on ARM SoC platforms using Yocto or Buildroot, device trees, and kernel drivers.
  • Industrial control platforms and protocols including Beckhoff TwinCAT, EtherCAT, PLCs, Modbus, or EPICS.
  • Data acquisition, signal processing, test automation, precision timing and trigger distribution using PTP, White Rabbit, or IRIG.
  • DFM/DFT practices, contract manufacturing, mentoring junior engineers, or leading small projects.

Culture & Benefits

  • Collaborative engineering environment involving controls, mechanical, software, manufacturing, operators, physicists, and controls engineers.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage; basic and supplemental life insurance; and short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • Paid parental leave, paid sick time, 13 company-paid holidays, and an annual paid company shutdown.
  • Flexible paid time off and a 401(k) with a company match of up to 6%.
  • Eligible employees may receive equity and benefits eligibility varies by employment status.
